The Training Visa Subclass 407 is a short-stay visa that allows individuals to undertake occupational training in Australia to enhance their skills for their career or area of study, or to participate in professional development programs. To be eligible for this visa, applicants must be nominated by their sponsor/employer for a specific training program. There are three types of eligible training for nomination:

1. Occupational Training Required for Registration:

  • This type of training is necessary for individuals to gain occupational registration, membership, or licensing to work in their occupation in Australia or their home country.
  • It is not suitable for individuals already working in the occupation or seeking professional association (e.g., an accountant wanting to become a chartered accountant).
  • The sponsor must provide a letter from the regulatory body proving the necessity of the training for registration.
  • The length of training depends on the registration requirements.

2. Occupational Training to Improve Skills:

  • This nomination applies to structured workplace-based training for eligible occupations listed on the 407 Training Visa Occupation List.
  • The training must be tailored to the individual's specific training needs and related to the occupation.
  • Applicants must have recent and relevant experience, with at least 12 months of full-time experience in the occupation within the 24 months before the nomination.
  • The duration of training depends on what is required to ensure the individual's skill level matches the necessary standards.

3. Occupational Training for Capacity Building Overseas:

  • There are three categories under this type:
  • Overseas Qualification: For students currently enrolled in foreign education institutions who need practical training, research, or observation to complete their qualification. The training must meet the student's specific needs.
  • Government Support: Training supported by a government agency in either Australia or the applicant’s home country.
  • Professional Development: Involves face-to-face classroom teaching in Australia for managerial or professional employees.

Each training type has its own criteria, and the duration of the visa depends on the training required to meet the skill or qualification standards.
