Training visa (subclass 407)

The Training Visa (Subclass 407) is a short-term visa for individuals to undergo occupational training or professional development in Australia. It allows the applicant to gain the training needed for occupational registration or licensing, skill enhancement, or capacity building for overseas employment. The visa is valid for up to two years and is subject to condition 8102, prohibiting any work outside of the training specified in the application. Health insurance must be maintained throughout the stay.


Eligibility Criteria:


  • Applicants must be 18 or older, have functional English, hold private health insurance, meet health and character requirements, and intend to stay temporarily in Australia.
  • Sponsorship by an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor is required.


Occupational Trainees:


  • Must be nominated by their sponsor for specific activities, such as training for occupational registration, working in an occupation from the 407 Training Visa Occupations List, or government-supported training.
  • Recent and suitable prior experience (12 months full-time) is necessary.
  • At least 70% of training should be on-the-job.


Professional Development:


  • Aimed at individuals in management or professional positions overseas. Training is primarily classroom-based and must be relevant to the role.


Visa Conditions:


  • The visa is granted for a period of 6 months to 2 years, depending on the required training duration.
  • Condition 8102 applies to the primary applicant, restricting work to the approved training. Condition 8104 limits secondary applicants to 40 hours of work per fortnight.
  • Processing time varies between 71 days to 4 months, and applicants can remain in Australia on a bridging visa during processing.


Fees:


  • Main application fee: AUD 415
  • Additional applicants (18+): AUD 415
  • Additional applicants (under 18): AUD 105
  • Subsequent temporary application charge: AUD 700
